Failing to plan is planning to fail” is a common saying that is a lot more true than you think. Can you recall how many times you’ve tried to lose weight in the past only to fail badly? Did those attempts to lose weight all start with a sudden urge you got while watching TV to get up and start exercising? The real reason you failed to lose so many times in the past is that you didn’t have the necessary action plan ready. That’s why 99% of the people who make New Year resolutions never actually stick to them.

The most important step you have to take if you want to lose weight is to create a clearly detailed plan that will outline exactly how many pounds you want to lose by what date and how. You can’t just get up one day and go jogging thinking you’ll lose 10 pounds in three days. You need to set small goals at first and once you achieve them you can work on bigger goals.

The three questions you need to answer that will outline your weight loss plan are: how much? by when? and how?. Get a piece of paper right now and answer these 3 questions. “I want to lose 1 pound a week by dieting”. Now you can plan what you’ll be doing for the week in order to meet your goal.

To achieve that goal you would need to create a 500 calorie deficit per day for an entire week by dieting. Don’t be afraid when you see the word “dieting”. People generally have a negative view on dieting that suggests they can’t eat anything they enjoy anymore or that there are certain foods they won’t be able to eat (more on that in the nutrition section). But for now you just need to understand that as long as you’re staying below your body’s calorie needs then you will lose weight. Though instead of eating 3 servings of a meal you’d have just one. Or instead of having a soft drink with your lunch you could drink water. Your goal should simply be to achieve a deficit to lose weight.

Creating a weight loss plan and printing it out is really helpful if you’re just starting out. You can write what meals you’ll be having during the week and that way you will know what you are and aren’t allowed to eat.
